Keep this forum or create a brand new one?.

Sentinel » Tue Jul 14, 2015 5:29 pm

So now this re-vamp is up and running there have been various opinions about it. The question is would you prefer to keep this one as it is or do i create a brand new forum on a different host and keep this as an archive only. A new one on Phpbb3 means a thanks type function, easier search function and a lot less clutter. The downsides are having to re-register on a new forum and re-starting your posting and threads.

The poll will stay open for a couple of weeks and then we will see what happens. Please take a second to take part.  Smile

While an easier search function (not that this one is difficult, though it won't search for three letter names eg 'Mee') and Thanks function would be useful, would a new forum be structured all that differently from the way this one has after being revised and enlarged?

Now that most of the unforseen glitches have been sorted out here, it seems like a whole lot of work for you to create a brand new forum from scratch, TS, with only relatively minor benefits...

Typing this it also occurs to me that once forums are 'abandoned' to being merely archives, a time may come when they seem not worth keeping.
And losing a whole wealth of material (again) would be a catastrophe.

This one isn't really 'broke' after all, so is starting all over again really necessary?

Hello Sentinel and members Smile

I have had a good think about this board which I do like immensely Smile I know that Sentinel has put a lot of work into this board which I have enjoyed contributing.  I know on the previous board I made a few duplicate threads due to the My Free Forum flaw in the search mode. I think with deleting the headings and just having the presenters name should work. However I agree with Hoop and I do not want to put unnecessary work upon Sentinel.
I have voted to keep this board as lots of the regular cappers have started threads and it would be unfair to start all over again.

I know that on Saturday morning I spent over two hours here ensuring that I didn't duplicate threads. I think if each of us that enjoy doing caps, should spend a few moments checking threads.
Hopefully this should cut out duplicate threads which will save Sentinel having to lock threads.

All,

In a moment of madness I voted to create a new forum as this one seemed to be getting rather cluttered but on reflection it is not a new forum that is required but perhaps this one just needs to be tweaked so as the Search is for the "current" forum and there is a search for the archived material.

It would be a disaster to loose the older material (as happened before) - I agree with hoop that once forums are 'abandoned' to being merely archives, a time comes when they seem not worth keeping and loosing a whole wealth of older material would be a catastrophe.

So right "This one isn't really 'broke' after all, so is starting all over again really necessary?" So on further reflection I would therefore prefer to keep what we have.

Cheers, HH

I'm for a new forum.    Free forums have their issues as shown when TSC was on Proboards and FreeForums.

While MyFreeForums has been great to this board, I'd rather have a new forum with all the improved phpBB functionality, such as search and thanks buttons.

+1 for a new board. New functionality is clearly needed to breathe new life to the forum

Not wishing to become cheerleader for the 'No' vote Laughing, but how exactly would 'new functionality' 'breathe new life' into the forum? There wouldn't be any such radical changes were it to be created.
There seems to be only two benefits to TS and the big posting members doing all the work involved - a slightly improved search engine and a Thanks button - worth having if we were starting from scratch, agreed, but we're not. And those kind of minor upgrades aren't going to galvanise contributors or lurkers to greater efforts or enthusiasm.
I'm sure (as reasonable men and women) we're all open to persuasion, but I've yet to hear anything that justifies either the effort or the 'disruption' - and archiving this forum will probably seal its fate. Terminally.
Wink

Thanks for the imput everyone.

The search function isn't to bad since i changed the look, if for instance i do a search for Kate Garraway the first two results that come up are...

Kate Garraway - caps & videos

Kate Garraway - HQs.

and the same goes for any other search as well. Everything below these first results is old stuff from the archive section so it's actually quite easy to find the latest stuff now.

Although a "thanks" button would be handy we have had a few years here without one and we have done ok so i can take it or leave it.

Personally i'm happy either way, creating a brand new forum is not  much extra work and to be honest i quite enjoy doing them, probably explains why i have had about 10 over the years for various things  Smile

vBulletin would be the best but i will never understand why it cots $249 for a copy of that. If they did a basic one for around $50 then i would go for it.

Laughing So you really want the fun of making a new one  Laughing

Seriously, though - ultimately it's your call, TS - but if you actually want to make a new one some kind of sworn affadavit will be required ensuring this forum's then archived material will remain available indefinitely, for posterity and as tribute to all the top totty and work that resulted in their presences herein.  Wink  Smile

What ever happens the old stuff will remain. We have lost to much good pics and vids over the years when forums have just vanished or got closed down. I am sure there are a few of us here that have fond memories of long gone places such as Vics, Robb's & Things Things.

MyFreeForums are great at keeping old boards up.   Mine while disabled is still online.

You could just post a 'How to' showing people how to search the forum and what to look for thread wise, before they post.

I was actually thinking of simple FAQ thread when i started sorting this new look forum out, then i just forgot all about it. I will create one over the next day or two for the search options and then add to it when more questions turn up.

Even though it may be a bit of a pain i am also going to ask about changing the name of the forum.

You can request a new URL from MyFreeForums which will shadow this one.

Changing the physical name of the site can be done from the admin function.

Was just going to match it to the site so the url would be as follows.

capitalcaptures.myfreeforums.com

We will see, going to be very busy for a few days so won't have time to do it yet anyway.
